Maoala has a strong place as a support Tem with Hypnotist, which sleeps every tem on the board for a turn on entry, allowing you to potentially set up with other tems on this turn. Outside of its trait, Maoala has a very interesting offensive movepool, consisting of mostly utility-based attacks, but can do enough damage to not be ignored.
Wake-Up is used to allow Maoala to wake up its partner on leads allowing them to use setup moves like Heat Up or Madness Buff whist the opposing tems are unable to move. Due to the base power of 1 on this attack, even with max offensive invest the damage dealt to the partner is incredibly small. This is the only listed move I would class as mandatory, with the remaining 3 slots being more flexible.
Telekinetic Shrapnel is the preferred 0-hold of choice, outdamaging the other options, however Double Gash may be taken if you require the Melee coverage. Only one of these moves should be ran as your first turn will often be Wake-Up, and your higher impact moves are used more often in later turns. For Melee moves, Nito Seiho is your largest damage dealing option, additionally carrying the minor benefit of lowering the opponent's defense 1 stage. Haito Uchi gives Maoala some sleep utility with its 1-turn sleep, but deals less damage than Nito Seiho to compensate. Blackhole is especially potent with Earth Synergy, allowing you to reset the stat stages of an opponent, but importantly still clears statuses without synergy. Hypnosis is also an option for stronger sleep control than Haito Uchi. This fits better on a more hard-support oriented Maoala build, but is powerful in its own right.
Although Maoala has no particular gear it requires, War Drum can be good, allowing it to support both its own damage output and that of its physical allies. Refreshing Diabolo can also find value on Maoala, letting its setup ally have some more longevity in a match should it be focused and Maoala ignored
Hypnotist pairs best with Tems that possess powerful offensive setup moves like Heat Up and Madness Buff. Hypnotist allows safely leading these into most boardstates and getting a buff off for free, and letting them snowball the game from there. It can also work well with slower Mental Tems, allowing you to sleep the opponent's faster boardstate and get a move off that turn with your slower Mental attacker.
This very simple but effective spread maxes out speed for efficient use of Maoala's sleep moves, maxes out HP to stick around and support for as long as possible, and puts the leftover points into both defenses for the same reason. Maoala can usually get 4-5 turns of moves out of its base stamina - invest more if you feel it is needed.
